Here’s what we’re diving into in today’s newsletter:

Escudero Spotlights P88M Discrepancy
Coverage: Politics & Governance
When political balance sheets meet financial reality, the arithmetic gets messy fast. Senate Presiding Officer Francis “Chiz” Escudero put AMLC Executive Director Ronel Buenaventura on the hot seat during Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial. Escudero pointed out that even if you take the absurd possibility of stacking Duterte’s SALNs from 2022 to 2025, assuming she saved every single centavo, the total comes out to P336 million in declared assets.
Meanwhile, bank records for Duterte and her husband, lawyer Manases Carpio, show P424 million in combined transactions over that same stretch. That leaves an unexplained P88 million financial canyon, which balloons into billions when looking at wider transaction reports from 2007 to 2025. The AMLC chief couldn’t offer an explanation on the witness stand, leaving observers to wonder whether money was simply spinning in circles or if someone needs a serious refresher on financial disclosures.
Marcos, Nawrocki Sign Pact
Coverage: Foreign Policy & Defense
Manila and Warsaw just made their relationship official in the legal department. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. hosted Polish President Karol Nawrocki at Malacañang, the first-ever state visit by a Polish head of state since diplomatic ties began in 1973. The duo signed a mutual legal assistance pact to team up against international crime, while opening the door for future extradition agreements. But it wasn’t all courtrooms and legal files. The leaders talked shop on strategic defense cooperation, expanding the Philippine military’s fleet of Polish-built Black Hawk helicopters, and collaborating on maritime security.
With geopolitical tension simmering both in the South China Sea and Eastern Europe, both nations agreed that regional security can no longer be treated as separate games.
September Inflation Hits 7.2%
Coverage: Business & Economy
If your grocery receipts feel a bit painful lately, you aren’t imagining things. Philippine inflation charged back to a three-year high of 7.2% in September, shattering economists’ expectations and snapping four straight months of cooling prices.
The blame falls on a double-whammy of P4.38 billion in agricultural damage from back-to-back monsoons and global crude oil surging past $100 per barrel due to Middle East volatility. Rice prices surged 20.3% year-on-year, while transport and utility costs kept climbing. With a Super El Niño on the horizon, financial analysts are warning that the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas might have to hit the brakes on rate cuts and issue further rate hikes to keep prices from spiraling further.
That’s it for today. We’ll see you again tomorrow.
